Outcome

The named environment runs the approved target version and passes the recorded health, compatibility, integration and recovery checks.

Overview

A supported Elastic environment needs a controlled upgrade to an approved target version. This deliverable executes controlled maintenance patches or major version upgrades using a disciplined sequence: pre-flight deprecation analysis, verified snapshot baselines, staged node rollout and post-upgrade operational verification.

Service request options

Option Credits: 1 EUR = 1 Credit Scope & objective Boundary
Patch 1,500 One supported maintenance patch (such as 8.15.1 to 8.15.3), one environment, direct upgrade path, no breaking changes or migration.
Simple 3,000 One supported minor version upgrade within the same major family (such as 8.14 to 8.16) for a standalone environment with limited compatibility checks.
Foundation 6,000 One environment with a broader version gap or defined pre-upgrade compatibility and deprecation remediation. Requires Delivery approval.
Standard 9,000 Up to two coordinated environments (such as Staging and Production) or environments with material supported integrations. Requires Delivery approval.
Advanced 12,000 Advanced topology (ECK, Kubernetes or multi-tier clusters), wider major version boundary jump (such as 7.17 to 8.x) or defined migration dependencies. Requires Delivery approval.

Scope

  • Review Upgrade Assistant and resolve documented configuration deprecations.
  • Verify snapshot repository health and capture a pre-upgrade rollback baseline.
  • Execute rolling node upgrades or orchestrate platform version changes.
  • Execute post-upgrade cluster health, shard allocation and API functionality tests.
  • Verify key client connectivity, ingest pipeline continuity and Kibana saved objects.
  • Document upgrade execution logs, post-upgrade version state and handover evidence.

Customer responsibilities

  • Formal approval of the target version and agreement on scheduled maintenance windows.
  • Designate system, network and application integration owners for verification.
  • Verify that backup storage repositories and credentials are functioning and accessible.
  • Grant required infrastructure, orchestrator or Elastic Cloud administrative privileges.
  • Conduct application-level functional testing during the post-upgrade verification window.

Prerequisites and assumptions

Confirm the supported upgrade path, node compatibility, backup and rollback mechanisms before activation. Patch and Simple options require a clean, directly supported upgrade path. Foundation, Standard and Advanced require Delivery approval. Unsupported upgrade paths or material migrations move the request outside this standard ladder.

Out of scope

  • Upgrades across unsupported version steps requiring intermediary legacy clusters not in scope.
  • Rewriting customer application source code or third-party client drivers.
  • Repairing unsupported community plugins or third-party binaries lacking target compatibility.
  • Cluster architecture redesigns or multi-region replatforming.
  • Continuous post-upgrade operational monitoring beyond standard verification.

Delivery approach

  • 1. Qualify path: Verify the target version against the compatibility matrix and inspect Upgrade Assistant.
  • 2. Baseline and recovery readiness: Validate snapshot repository health and trigger a verified cluster snapshot.
  • 3. Patch / upgrade: Execute orchestrated rolling node upgrades or automated cloud version transitions.
  • 4. Health and compatibility tests: Validate cluster status (green), shard allocation and API responsiveness.
  • 5. Recovery evidence: Confirm rollback documentation and operational snapshot integrity.
  • 6. Complete: Export version inventories, record passing verification tests and close handover.

Completion and evidence

The target Elastic version is active, and agreed health, compatibility, integration and recovery checks pass. Evidence delivered at sign-off includes:

  • Pre-upgrade and post-upgrade node, cluster and Kibana version inventories.
  • Pre-upgrade snapshot confirmation and recovery readiness log.
  • Post-upgrade cluster health, shard routing and index validation logs.
  • Verified client connectivity and data ingestion test results.
  • Documented exceptions and formal customer sign-off.

Delivery credits

This deliverable is available exclusively through Elastic Specialist Advisory. Once qualified by your Service Advisor and Delivery, the applicable credits are allocated from your available credit pool. Delivery credits represent the defined technical result, not consulting hours.

If the scope changes

If pre-flight checks uncover unresolvable deprecation blockers, broken snapshot repositories or unsupported legacy plugins, work pauses immediately. Your Service Advisor will requalify the scope to another option, an architecture deliverable or a governed remediation plan before extra scope is executed or additional credits are consumed.

How to use this deliverable

  • 1. Discuss upgrade requirements and version roadmaps with your advisor during bi-weekly working sessions.
  • 2. Your Service Advisor evaluates cluster health and selects the applicable variant across the ladder.
  • 3. The Service Request is activated, locking the maintenance window and credit value.
  • 4. Delivery executes the upgrade, validates stability and hands over completion evidence.
